About this place
The signature katsu sandwich is a popular choice to finish a meal. Thick pork loin is breaded and deep-fried, then served with Mamezo’s special sauce; takeaway is available. Diners have commented on the cutlet’s thickness and how substantial it is. It is an appealing option whether fried food is the main event or you are looking for one more dish at the end of the evening.
There is more to the fried-food menu than the sandwich. One diner recalled enjoying both the fried horse mackerel and fillet katsu at lunch, while another paired fried prawns with fillet katsu. Options include two prawns with special tartare sauce and a mega fried prawn, described on the menu as generously filled right through the coating. There is plenty of scope to try a dish at a time.
For a drink and a few small plates, consider fatty salmon or mentaiko marinated in sake lees, or cream cheese steeped in a miso-and-sake-lees mixture. Dried firefly squid is lightly grilled, and the menu suggests pairing it with sake. Beer, sake and shochu are among the drinks, alongside Mamezo’s own whisky highball.
Pasta offers another way to make a meal, alongside the katsu sandwich and fried dishes. The mentaiko cream pasta is made with a generous amount of cream and spicy cod roe; the spinach and bacon cream pasta is described as savoury. Mamezo also suits solo diners, and opens for lunch on some days. A set meal at midday and snacks with a drink in the evening make for different ways to enjoy the menu.
